Solihull young fundraisers cycle for DEBRA and Marie Curie

A group of five 14 year old boys from Solihull (Oli Cottom, Samihan Ghanekar, Rodan Holland, Alex Lavery and Dominic Martens) who meet regularly as a group have taken it upon themselves to raise money for local charities Marie Curie Big Build and DEBRA.

They’ve raised money for these charities by repairing bikes and organising themselves on a sponsored cycle from Balsall Common to Kenilworth. Helped by young people as group leaders (Ashkaan Golestani and Carl Whiteman) as well as bike mechanic Richard Williams, the boys raised £310.

Alex said:

“It was great to learn some valuable bike repairing skills, as well as raising money for really good causes.”

Two years ago, the group also raised £180 for Marie Curie and Acorns, and Rodan said:

“I am so proud of all the activities we do, and it’s lots of fun meeting with my friends and to have interesting discussions.”

This is one of three such informal groups in Solihull based on an International Junior Youth (12-15 years) Empowerment Programme which aims to strengthen the participants’ moral resolve and encourages them to be positively engaged through doing service activities for the community.
